How to
overcome boredom in learning mathematics and make it more fun, interesting and
challenging.
Boredom
is a complex case and problem
today. There are many reasons
that support to be bored. The most
common one is that you have no idea what to do. The Other reasons because you feel lazy, tired or
just don't want to do the things that are available for you to do. Maybe you
have ideas about
somethings but you guess that you can't do the things
you want to do. Boredom becomes a great concern when it results in
procrastination, indecision and feeling listless and jaded.
Yesterday,
I was teaching mathematics for 2nd level of Junior High School student. “Oooo,
what will we learn today?”, I shouted. “How about multiplying exponentials?”, They
answered. “Ok, let’s start with that”. I began with multiplying exponential. I asked,
”do you understand with this material, Multiplying exponentials?”. And then he
said “emm...... just a little bit”. Maybe for them, this materials is very
difficult. “Why?”, I said. Then he answered “I’m still confuse, it’s so
complicated to understand, then I’m bored, sir”. It was probably difficult to
understand for students because of boredom especially.”.
From
the above case study, we concluded that if the methods using in a learning
process are not adaptive, suitable, and also appropriate to learning target,
then boredom would be dominated inside.
Boredom are the great enemy of teacher
Exactly, In Indonesia teachers used ancient methods in learning
process. It means that methods are used hereditary till now in learning process,
whereas the science and technology have been developed rapidly.
Of course, it would caused students be bored in its
learning, then it is the big main problem for our quality learning in our country. As
a teacher, the student’s state or condition which has been already bored caused
of methods should be main attention than more oriented in conveying materials,
because the students in under-pressure would be more difficult and felt forced
to obtained even understand the materials.
Everyone
has been felt
boredom in learning. This
boredom maybe could
be a factor that cause
ignorance of students for subject in school. In class, bored students will
inclined anything include subjects or lesson given by teacher. The boredom could appear due to many
things. As
already stated earlier that boredom are cause methods of teaching learning
process that are not suitable with the pupils. Senior teachers usually
use the same teaching methods for years since they began teaching. For their
era, the methods used may fit the desired by students. But, in this era with
technology and communication evolve very great, then the method must also
evolve of
course. In
addition boredom can be caused by perform the same activities repeatedly, and
this is likely to lead a saturation resulting in loss of spirit and enthusiasm.
To Overcome
Boredom
Actually,
there are many more factors causes of boredom in learning. But, today we focus
to overcome the solutions to these problems. Here are some ideas on how to overcome
boredom.
First,
it should be held some variations in learning mathematics taking place.
Probably would be better with this method, we called “SEMPOA. Suggest, Nature,
Playing, Sport and Acting.
In
SEMPOA, we do suggestion. Of course, it is not usual suggestion, but incredible
done. Why should we start with its first? Yeah. The most important thing in our
learning is mental psychology of the students. It means that they must have
good condition in their soul and also fresh mind for thinking, especially in
learning Mathematics.
That’s
why we are often to embed and accustom many positive suggestions to theirselves
and ourselves also. It done by giving positive mind-sets in sustainable
pattern. Try to make a habit for thinking and assume that something is
difficult for doing before done. Assume that problems or challenges are not
enemy or ghost, otherwise as best friend. Because why? Positive perception
would be appear positive behaviour and steel mental to undergo everything of
course.
Next,
we go to nature. Did you know, nature has many positive suggestions for our
life and ourselves especially. Positive suggestions from nature would give
incredible advantages to mathematics teaching learning process. The beauty of
view and scenery nature, the blowing of cool air, and the amazing painting of
sky, all of them would be conducive means and infrastructures for supporting
learning mathematics more simplicity. Then, as a teacher should be understand
the time that support students felt bored to study, probably better than to
take teaching learning in nature or study with nature. There are many application
of mathematics in nature, like the how to find the area and perimeter of a
plane, split calculating the amount of trees or objects are there in a garden,
how to form some geometries, find the arc of flower sheath, and many more.
In
mathematics we can also play with many things. Next SEMPOA is playing, sport and
acting. Many people ask How could we play with mathematics that are many
formulas, numbers, and also theorem complicatedly? Don’t worry be happy. There
are many kinds of game that could we create from mathematics. For example like
we called by “Galah Panjang, Ular Tangga, “. It would make a simplicity in
learning algebra, statistics, especially make a habit to be split in
calculating and problem solving. We could also doing sport to find the
distance, time, like the swimming and marathon. Besides that, there is puzzle.
It give a simplicity in learning algebra also, logic, set, and problem solving.
Finally,
SEMPOA should us in the last step that is acting. Everyone must give a
movement, especially between teachers and students. Because why? We cannot
moreover to support incredible system and quality in learning mathematics
without support among teachers and students in moving and acting. That’s why,
they are mutualism component.
